Golden State Urology Before the WordPress Website Redesign

Golden State Urology is a urology clinic in California that centers its operations around patient-focused service. Its website provides information about treatments, medical conditions, services, and the clinic's team.

Before the redesign, the website's visual presentation did not meet modern usability practices. Inconsistent spacing, typography issues, and an unbalanced mobile layout made the content less clear and made it harder for patients to find the information they needed.

The clinic wanted to preserve the content and existing pages. What needed to change was how they were presented: visual hierarchy, typography, spacing, and mobile layout. The task was therefore to carefully rebuild the entire live website without losing any existing pages or content.

It was important for the clinic to make the website more convenient for patients and prepare it for long-term use.

Project in Three Key Points

NEW

Design System

Established consistent rules for typography, spacing, and visual hierarchy in line with modern UI/UX practices.

FRESH

Mobile Layout

We redesigned the page layouts for smaller screens to make medical content easier to read and browse on smartphones.

FULL

Website Rebuild

We rebuilt the website from design layouts to implementation based on the live version, without losing any existing pages or content.

Outdated Visual System Made It Harder for Patients to Find Information

The main problem was that the way medical content was presented made the website less clear and could negatively affect patient trust. This is particularly important for a clinic, as users visit the website to find information about medical conditions, treatments, and available services.

There were three reasons behind this:

Inconsistent Typography and Spacing

The lack of a consistent visual hierarchy made medical content harder to understand.

Unbalanced Mobile Layout

On smartphones, the arrangement of elements made pages harder to browse and read.

Lack of a Consistent Design System

Without unified rules for typography, spacing, and components, it was more difficult to develop the website consistently.

The main constraint of the project was that the website had to be completely rebuilt while preserving all existing pages, their content, and their organization. In other words, the new version was built on the existing live website rather than from scratch.

WordPress Website Redesign: New Design System and Mobile Layout

We tied every decision to a specific problem with the old website. The existing live version served as the foundation for the complete rebuild, allowing us to preserve the existing pages and content as required by the clinic.

Unified Design System. Since there were no consistent rules for visual presentation, we created a system for typography, font sizes, spacing, and hierarchy. This gave developers clear guidelines for building page layouts.

Mobile Layout. We rebuilt it so that content would follow a logical order and be easy to read on smartphones. The content itself remained unchanged.

Design and Development Alignment. We prepared the layouts with their WordPress implementation in mind from the start to reduce ambiguity for developers and the amount of rework required.

How We Rebuilt the WordPress Website Based on the Live Version

1. Phased Implementation

We implemented the new design rules gradually, section by section, until they covered the entire website. The content of each section remained in place throughout the process.

This approach allowed us to gradually apply the new typography, spacing, and visual hierarchy to existing pages without altering their content.

2. The Biggest Engineering Challenge

The most challenging task was to completely rebuild the website while transferring all pages and materials from the old version to the new one without changing the content structure.

The second challenge was aligning the new design with its practical implementation. The new spacing, typography, and hierarchy had to fit within the existing website structure, so we coordinated the layouts with the development team in advance to reduce ambiguity and rework during implementation.

3. Technology Stack

  • CMS: WordPress

  • Backend: PHP

  • Database: MySQL
